Poverty in Kalamazoo

Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of WMU students stay in the campus "bubble" and never venture out to get to know Kalamazoo.

It comes as a surprise to many that Kalamazoo's poverty rates are high. How high? Check out these statistics from the Poverty Reduction Initiative's website. This is one of the organizations that Kalamazoo ASB helped last year at one of their poverty simulations.

Last year, students from Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo Valley Community College spent their spring break volunteering with non-profits and learning about social justice issues in the Kalamazoo area.

This year, they are back and ready for action! We will be selling "I HEART KALAMAZOO" T-shirts to benefit non-profits in the area. All proceeds will either go toward a monetary donation to the non-profits or will help fund a project. Last year, for example, we used funds to buy breakfast food and we served breakfast at the Rickman House two mornings. We also bought BINGO prizes such as food and socks for Ministry With Community. Please help us keep Kalamazoo a healthy and happy place to live!
